A downloadable game for Windows

[Developed in 2024/2025]

A turn-based combat simulator inspired by classic JRPGs, developed in Unity as part of my degree at the University of Chester.

This prototype enables players to experience the standard framework of turn-based JRPG combat. Several additional features which enhance gameplay and make it more engaging have also been implemented and can be enabled before the start of a battle. These include:

  • Action Commands - Inspired by Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (Square Co. Ltd., 1996), this feature introduces timed button presses which occur when performing certain combat actions. Executing the challenge successfully will increase the potency of the associated action, whereas failing to do so will reduce its effectiveness.
  • Press Turn - Inspired by Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne (Atlus Co. Ltd., 2003), this feature grants players greater control over the turn sequence. Each playable character receives a new ability which allows them to either increase their number of turns or transfer their current turn to another member of the active party.
  • Disorder System - A newly devised feature that disincentivises players from repeatedly executing the same commands during combat. Performing non-identical actions in succession increases the players' Disorder Level, granting attack and defence buffs to all members of the active party. However, repeating the same command twice or more would reset the level to 0, and revoke all applied bonuses.

In addition to being able to form a party from a variety of unique playable characters, players also possess the ability to customise each encounter to meet their individual preferences. The selection of adjustable battle parameters includes:

  • Enemy Difficulty - Dictates the number of enemies spawned at the beginning of an encounter (Easy = 1-2, Normal = 3-4, Hard = 5-6).
  • Inventory Preset - Dictates the types of items placed within the player's inventory at the beginning of an encounter.
  • Dynamic Camera - Enabling this option causes the camera to smoothly change its direction to face the current turn holder at the start of each new turn. This also triggers an introductory animation at the beginning of an encounter.
  • Starting HP - Dictates the percentage of their total Health Points each member of the active party possesses at the beginning of an encounter.
  • Starting MP - Dictates the percentage of their total Magic Points each member of the active party possesses at the beginning of an encounter.
  • Battle Speed - Controls the rate at which encounters progress, including animations and camera movements. Expressed as a percentage.
  • Free Play - Enabling this option allows players to include multiple instances of each character within their formed party.
